The story of Klipdrift Premium
Klipdrift Premium is a South African brandy made at the Klipdrift distillery in Robertson, in the Western Cape, bottled at 43%. The first Klipdrift bottle was produced on 4 May 1938, and the launch range was a five-year-old and a ten-year-old brandy. The brand is now owned by Heineken.
Premium is made from copper pot still spirit, distilled in stills that are around fifty years old. Only the middle of the run, the heart, goes into the barrel, with the first and last parts discarded. It is matured for at least three years in French oak, then blended by the brandy master. The colour is amber gold. Cedar, tobacco and warm spice lead the nose, with apple and walnut underneath, and it is full-bodied but smooth with a lingering finish.
Pour it neat or over ice to taste the cedar and tobacco, or build a long drink with cola. A few walnuts or a piece of dark chocolate alongside suit the wood and spice.
