Pizzolato is a family winery in Villorba, just outside Treviso in the Veneto. Settimo Pizzolato started it in 1981 alongside his father, Gino, and the family counts five generations of work on the land. The estate was certified for organic wine in 1991. Settimo has made wines without animal-derived ingredients since 1985, and they now carry vegan certification, which describes how the wine is made and clarified.
Prosecco takes its name from a small village near Trieste. The village sits roughly 150 kilometres from the vineyards where Glera, the Prosecco grape, is grown, and the denomination was extended to the wider growing area when it was set up. Pizzolato's version is a light sparkling wine with fresh pear and citrus aromas, crisp bubbles and a balanced sweetness.
It is a good wine for the start of a meal. Pour it with a plate of grilled vegetables, fresh mozzarella, a simple risotto or a bowl of olives. The citrus is clean enough that it will also pair with white fish and light salads.
