The story of Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Rslg

Roaring Meg is the early drinking second label of Mt Difficulty, the Bannockburn winery in Central Otago. It launched in 2004, and its range runs through Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and this Riesling. Mt Difficulty has been owned by Foley Family Wines since the 2019 purchase.

Riesling is one of the minority grapes in a region where Pinot Noir makes up over 80 per cent of plantings. Central Otago is also the only part of New Zealand with a true continental climate: sheltered behind high mountains, with hot dry summers, cold winters and large swings between day and night. Harvest does not usually start until mid to late April, six or seven weeks after the northern vineyards.

This one is off dry. The palate leads with grapefruit, pomelo and lemon zest, with juicy green apple, ripe stone fruit and a mineral streak following. A fine phenolic grip and bright acidity give it a zesty, citrus edged finish, and the touch of sweetness sits well in balance.

Serve it well chilled. It suits honey glazed ham, Thai fish cakes or a pork and apple salad.
