Seresin's Estate Sauvignon Blanc comes from Raupo Creek, a clay-rich vineyard in the centre of the Omaka Valley in Marlborough. The estate is certified organic by BioGro and Demeter, and the winery notes describe the site as biodynamic. The vineyard floor across the estate is carpeted with wild flowers and grasses.
The winemaking is hands-off. The juice settles naturally, then ferments with native yeasts in small stainless steel tanks and older French oak, with about a tenth in barrel and no new oak. A little Sémillon, around a tenth of the blend, adds texture and a savoury, leafy edge.
Tasters pick up white passionfruit, lemon balm, green apple and oyster shell, with slate-like minerality and a dry, saline finish that recalls grapefruit. Chill it well and serve it with seafood, oysters in particular, or a plate of salads. It is also vegan friendly and screw capped, so it opens easily at the table.
