The story of Te Hera Est PinotN

Te Herā Estate is a small family wine business on Te Muna Road, Martinborough. The vineyard was planted in 1996 and was the first on the road. The name means the sail, and it stands for the voyages of the family's forebears, who sailed to New Zealand in the 1840s.

The vineyard has been certified organic with BioGro since the 2010 vintage, and the wines have been certified since 2013. Pinot Noir covers 12 acres, in a mix of clones, with one more acre of Riesling. A thin layer of topsoil sits over 25 metres of alluvial gravel, and wind, low rainfall and spring frosts keep the crops small.

The winemaking is deliberately simple. The grapes are handpicked, destemmed by gravity without crushing, fermented with wild yeast and matured in French oak barrels. The Estate Pinot Noir shows dark cherry and berry fruit with touches of violet and spice, a little smoky oak and soft tannins. The palate is fine and elegant, with savoury depth under the sweet fruit.

It is a good partner for roast pork belly, a mushroom and barley risotto or a lamb shoulder cooked slowly with rosemary.
