Dark berriesStone fruitWarm spiceVarietal is the straightforward end of the Tempus Two line: one grape, named on the label, in a dry medium-bodied style. It comes under a screw cap at 13% alcohol, with balanced acidity and soft tannins.
Tempus Two started in 1997 as the personal label of Lisa McGuigan, a fourth-generation member of a Hunter Valley winemaking family, and it is now part of Australian Vintage. This wine is a clean, fruit-first expression of the grape.
The aroma is luscious red fruit with a hint of black pepper and spice. On the palate the fruit comes up front, then black pepper and spice settle in behind it, and the soft tannins add a little complexity without getting in the way.
A short time in the fridge before pouring suits it well. Lamb, pizza, and both soft and hard cheeses all work, and it is an easy red for a barbecue or a casual dinner.
