The story of Finlaggan Old Reserve

Finlaggan is an Islay single malt bottled by The Vintage Malt Whisky Company, which was founded in 1992 by Brian Cook, a former director at Morrison Bowmore Distillers. The range was redesigned and relaunched in 2014, and Old Reserve is its entry-level bottling at 40 per cent, sitting below Eilean Mor and the cask strength release.

The name comes from Loch Finlaggan on the north side of Islay, just west of Port Askaig, where the Macdonald Lords of the Isles had their seat. The castle ruins there are the namesake of the whisky. The bottler does not name the distillery that makes the spirit.

What matters in the glass is the peat. Old Reserve is heavily peated, with rich peat smoke and a salty sea breeze on the nose, then sweet malt, pepper and a little tar on the palate, and a warming, smoky finish. It tastes of campfire and coast.

Pour it neat in a tulip glass to start. A little water softens the smoke, and a peated highball with soda over plenty of ice is a good way to enjoy the salt and smoke without the heat.
