The story of Herradura Anejo Tequila

Herradura is made at Casa Herradura in Amatitán, Jalisco, and the house traces its craft back to 1870. The Añejo was first released in 1962.

Everything starts with blue Weber agave cut at six to eight years old. The piñas are steamed slowly in clay ovens for 26 hours, then milled, and the juice is fermented in open-topped tanks over three days by wild yeast from the fruit trees on the estate. The spirit is distilled twice and then goes into charred American white oak barrels, which Herradura makes itself. The Añejo spends 25 months in wood, more than double the year the category requires, and is bottled at 40 per cent.

The colour is toasted toffee with copper tones. The nose is agave and toasted oak with candied nuts, cinnamon and citrus. The palate is nutty caramel with hints of pineapple and orange, and the finish is sweet and soft, with warm baking spice. The brand likens it to Bananas Foster. It is made for slow sipping, and Herradura's own suggestion for mixing is a Tequila Manhattan.
