The story of Hofbrau Original
Hofbräu Original comes from the Staatliches Hofbräuhaus in München, the Royal Bavarian brewery, which was founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V to supply the Munich court. It passed from the royal family to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1852 and is still owned by the Bavarian state. The same brewery runs the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl beer hall in the city centre and one of the large tents at Oktoberfest.
Original is the house Helles, the pale lager of Munich. It is bottom-fermented and brewed at 5.1 per cent from water, pale malt, Munich malt and hops. The malt gives a soft, bready sweetness with a hint of light caramel, the hops add a floral aroma and a clean, refined bitterness at the end, and nothing is meant to shout.
Pour it cold into a tall glass and let a finger of foam settle. In Bavaria it goes with roast pork, sausages, soft and hard cheeses, salads, and potato or dumpling dishes.
